Rusting Historical German Cable Car Faces Million-dollar Renovation - Aging German Ferry has Corroded, Facing Costly Restoration of Over a Million Dollars
The oldest Schwebefähre in Germany, located in the picturesque town of Osten-Hemmoor in the Cuxhaven district, is set for a major restoration project. The cost of the restoration is estimated at one million euros, with the Cuxhaven district committing approximately 6.5 million euros towards the cost themselves.
The historic cable ferry, which has developed into a tourism magnet in recent decades, has been operating since 1909 and has become a beloved attraction for locals and visitors alike. Despite no longer being necessary for regular traffic due to the construction of a nearby bridge in the 1970s, the Schwebefähre continues to serve pedestrians, cyclists, and small vehicles, thanks to the dedication of volunteers.
The restoration process will involve cleaning, sealing, and replacement of damaged areas, with the primary aim being to halt rust caused by weather influences. Various funding applications have been submitted, including one from the federal government for around two million euros, and the German Foundation for Monument Protection and other parties have pledged around 80,000 euros.
The Schwebefähre is not a ship but a vehicle that moves over water while hanging from a fixed support. It is worth noting that Germany is not the only country with Schwebefähren; there are eight worldwide, with others found in countries such as France, Spain, Argentina, and Great Britain, where three Schwebefähren can be found.
As the Cuxhaven district association operating the Schwebefähre celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, the restoration project marks an exciting new chapter in the history of this unique piece of transportation infrastructure. Many cyclists use the ferry, and others come from far away just to float over the Oste with the oldest Schwebefähre in Germany. The restoration is planned to take place over the next two years, ensuring that this cherished historical artifact will continue to serve as a beacon of local pride and a draw for tourists for years to come.
- The restoration project for the Schwebefähre in Osten-Hemmoor, aided by community funds, will offer vocational training opportunities for local residents, particularly in the fields of construction, technology, and finance, ensuring the preservation of this historic landmark.
- Upon completion of the restoration, the refurbished Schwebefähre will not only serve as a testament to industry innovation but also attract tourists seeking unique experiences, fostering further economic growth for the Cuxhaven district through vocational training and tourism.
