AI benefits for small and medium-sized enterprises appear appealing, yet the practical execution poses distinct challenges
Indian Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are showing caution when it comes to adopting artificial intelligence (AI), despite recognising its potential benefits. A key reason for this hesitancy is a lack of understanding and awareness about AI's practical value, coupled with concerns over cost, skills, data readiness, and infrastructure limitations.
Many MSMEs perceive AI as a complex, technical solution that seems more relevant to large enterprises rather than their daily operations. This lack of clarity on how AI can specifically enhance their processes and the absence of affordable, user-friendly solutions are contributing to delayed or stalled adoption.
Cost is another significant barrier. AI tools and platforms are often seen as expensive, with upfront investments in software, hardware, consultancy, and data management being perceived as risky, especially without guaranteed returns on investment (ROI). Furthermore, MSMEs often lack the necessary technical team or structured data to deploy AI effectively.
A digital skill gap also poses a challenge. Many MSME owners and employees lack AI expertise and digital literacy, compounded by challenges in data quality and availability due to reliance on fragmented or manual records that are not AI-ready.
Infrastructure issues, such as inconsistent internet connectivity and limited access to cloud services, especially in semi-urban and rural areas, further hinder the scalability and integration of AI solutions. Systemic factors like talent shortages, regulatory gaps, and insufficient compute infrastructure also play a role.
To encourage AI adoption among MSMEs, experts suggest simplifying the journey and customising AI solutions to meet their specific needs. The government can help by creating a single-window AI hub offering curated tools, training, advisory, and sandbox access for MSMEs. This would provide a platform for MSMEs to explore AI's potential benefits and find affordable, user-friendly solutions.
Employees of MSMEs are also concerned about job losses, service disruption, or botched implementations of AI. Addressing these concerns and educating MSMEs about the potential for AI to create millions of new jobs with the right skilling is crucial.
Current AI tools in the market are often built for large enterprises, making them inaccessible for MSMEs due to a lack of technical expertise, infrastructure, and resources. Developing plug-and-play AI tools that are intuitive, easy to integrate, and designed specifically to solve small business problems could encourage more widespread adoption.
In conclusion, while Indian MSMEs acknowledge AI's potential to improve productivity, customer engagement, and innovation, their cautious stance stems from practical concerns. By addressing these challenges, we can help MSMEs unlock AI's transformative power and drive growth and innovation across the country.
