Are We Slipping Behind? Germany's AI Talent Drought: An Alarming Scenario

AI talent search intensifies among German corporations

Welcome to the grim reality where Germany's AI-related job market is in a state of stagnation. That's the brutally honest verdict of an analysis of around 60 million online job ads between 2019 and 2024 by the Bertelsmann Foundation. Here's the lowdown on why this is causing alarm bells to ring, and what experts are suggesting as possible solutions.

The job ads for AI developers and users in Germany have been dismally low. Since 2022, the number of such job listings in this important future field has remained stubbornly low, a situation that could put German companies at a major disadvantage in international competition, warn the experts.

Google's recent "AI Mode" unveiling is one indication that companies themselves are feeling the heat of falling behind in AI. Many companies are already playing catch-up, as revealed by a survey by the digital association Bitkom. Michael Hüther, director of the Institute of the German Economy, emphasized the need for companies to put their business models to the test and invest more in employee competencies and a bureaucracy-free implementation of the AI regulation.

Despite the ever-increasing adoption of AI and the high potential for productivity gains, the demand for personnel with the necessary AI expertise remains surprisingly low on the job market. Although the number of job listings for computer scientists, software developers, and other specialists with AI expertise increased from 97,000 in 2019 to 180,000 in 2022, this only accounted for a mere 1.5 percent of all job listings.

Interestingly, when companies hunt for AI-savvy employees, their focus is mainly on highly trained specialists in AI development. AI-savvy users, such as those in advertising and marketing or sales, are less frequently sought after.

Further, there is regional variation in the job market. While AI plays little role in the job market in half of all German districts and independent cities, there are leaders in AI-related jobs. These include the tech metropolis of Munich, the research hub of Karlsruhe, and the district of Böblingen near Stuttgart, along with other regions in the south and southwest of Germany, the metropolitan areas on the Rhine and Ruhr, and the Berlin area.

So, why is Germany suffering from an AI talent shortage?

  1. Global Demand vs. Supply: The global demand for AI expertise significantly outstrips supply, and Germany is not immune to this reality. As other countries competition intensifies for top AI talent, Germany may find itself lagging behind.
  2. Academic Curricula: German universities are not producing AI specialists at the same rate as other countries, partly due to a focus on theory rather than practical, industry-relevant skills[2].
  3. Immigration Policies: Strict immigration policies may hamper Germany's ability to attract top international AI talent, exacerbating the shortage[2].
  4. Lack of AI Education: There's a lack of education and awareness about AI in Germany, which could discourage young talents from pursuing careers in this field[2].

To address these challenges, Germany needs to rethink its approach to AI education, immigration policies, and collaboration with other countries to build a robust AI workforce and remain competitive in the global AI landscape.

The community policy and employment policy must address the issue of Germany's AI talent shortage, as immigration policies may be hindering the country's ability to attract top international AI talent. Additionally, the employment policy should focus on promoting AI education and awareness to encourage more young talents to pursue careers in this field.

To maintain a competitive edge in the global AI landscape, it is crucial for Germany to invest in technology, such as artificial-intelligence, by implementing a bureaucracy-free regulation and fostering a culture of innovation in its education system, rather than relying solely on highly trained specialists in AI development.
