Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky expresses dissatisfaction with the pace of company growth and outlines his plans for improvement.

Airbnb, the popular vacation rental platform, is aiming to revitalize its core business by layering on services and experiences, as well as transforming into an "AI-first application" over the next few years.

The company, founded in 2008, experienced a significant 40% growth in 2022. However, the growth rate declined to 18% in 2023 and further to 12% in 2024, leading CEO Brian Chesky to reminisce about Airbnb's "hypergrowth" days and express his aspirations for the company to grow at more than 20% one day.

At the Skift Global Forum conference for the travel industry, Chesky emphasized Airbnb's commitment to growth, stating that he believes the company's new offerings will become "multi-billion-dollar businesses" at some point.

To achieve this, Airbnb is leaning into AI. The platform is now handling tasks like canceling reservations and helping with travel plans, reducing human customer service interactions by 15%. The AI is also being used for personalized recommendations, dynamic pricing models, image recognition for quality control, fraud detection, and predictive analytics to optimize user experience, increase bookings, and grow revenue.

These efforts have led to a 30% increase in user satisfaction, 25% higher booking conversion, and 13% year-over-year revenue growth. Hosts are also benefiting from optimized pricing and occupancy.

Airbnb is not only focusing on AI but also expanding its services and experiences. Users can now book everything from massages and photography services to spa treatments, personal training, private chefs, and beauty treatments. The platform also offers unique experiences such as watching a comedy show or going on a boat sightseeing tour with local hosts.

The company redesigned its app in May to include booking services and experiences, aiming to make the platform more than just a place to find a place to stay.

Despite the progress, Chesky is not satisfied with the current growth rate and believes that Airbnb's growth will accelerate next year. He remains optimistic about the future of the company and its potential to revolutionize the travel industry.
