Revamped: Airports Get a Makeover with Augmented Reality Beauty Try-Ons

Hey there! Remember when trips to the airport meant limited time and space for trying out new makeup looks? Well, those days are behind us, courtesy of Perfect Corp. and travel retailer Dufry. Together, they're introducing AR makeup try-on tech at airports worldwide!

On Monday, they announced their partnership to bring this virtual magic to airport stores and online platforms. Brands like Benefit, Kylie Cosmetics, and Huda Beauty are all available for a virtual makeover.

As of now, the tech is live at London Heathrow, London Stansted, Manchester, and Barcelona airports. Dufry plans to roll it out to more airports in the future, with the online experience set to launch in 27 countries.

Travelers with tight schedules and limited luggage space can now take a breather and virtually experiment with colors and looks before making a purchase.

According to Perfect Corp. founder and CEO Alice Chang, "Our collaboration with global travel retailer Dufry allows us to also touch traveling consumers during their journey, be it online or offline."

Perfect Corp.'s roster of brand partnerships allows them to create virtual product SKUs for the AR beauty market. They're also the minds behind mobile apps like YouCam Makeup and YouCam Perfect, where you can virtually try on makeup and edit photos of yourself. Retailers can pick and choose the brands they want to deploy, subject to brand approval. Perfect Corp.'s database hosts over 350,000 SKUs from more than 500 global brands.

Virtual try-on is just one element of the metaverse and Web3 shopping experiences that brands are diving into. In fact, Google recently jumped on the bandwagon with a virtual dressing room through generative artificial intelligence on its search engine. Shoppers can now see an item on models ranging from sizes XXS to 4XL, representing different skin tones, body shapes, and hair types. Last year, Amazon unveiled its own AR tech for shoe try-ons on its site.

Virtual try-on could take personalization a step further, allowing shoppers to customize the model wearing a product. At airport stores with limited product offerings, the virtual tech can also present a broader selection of items for shoppers to consider, compared to what's usually available at duty-free shops.

So, the next time you're stuck at an airport, don't let the wait drag you down. Instead, embrace the future of shopping, experiment with new looks, and make your airport layovers a little more exciting!

  1. The integration of artificial intelligence in technology is expanding, as shown by Google's recent introduction of a virtual dressing room on its search engine.
  2. Aside from makeup, the virtual try-on technology could be extended to other products, potentially allowing shoppers to customize the model wearing a product.
  3. The partnership between Perfect Corp. and travel retailer Dufry is not only limited to makeup brands, as their database hosts over 350,000 SKUs from more than 500 global brands.
  4. The use of smartphones and gadgets, combined with augmented reality technology, is transforming the traditional shopping experience, even at airports where time and space may be limited.
