Alabama Files Lawsuit Against TikTok and ByteDance Over Data Security Concerns
Alabama Files Lawsuit Against TikTok for Allegedly Addicting Children
In a significant move, Alabama's Attorney General, Steve Marshall, has filed a lawsuit against TikTok Inc. and its parent company, ByteDance, claiming that the popular social media platform is engineered to keep children addicted. The lawsuit, filed in Montgomery County Circuit Court, accuses TikTok of contributory negligence concerning mental health trends among Alabama's youth.
The lawsuit asserts that TikTok intentionally develops algorithms to maximize user engagement, leading to endless and mindless scrolling by children. This prolonged engagement could potentially expose them to harmful content, including materials promoting depression, encouraging eating disorders, and glorifying behaviors such as self-harm and drug use.
Marshall further alleges that TikTok's safety measures, such as 'Kids Mode' and 'Restrictive Mode,' are ineffective and easily bypassed by children. He claims that TikTok prioritizes profits over the mental health of children, a claim bolstered by the app's vast user base—over one-third of its daily users in the U.S. being under the age of 14.
The complaint also raises security concerns, as TikTok is ultimately owned by ByteDance, a Chinese corporation. This ownership raises the specter of data mining and potential sharing of sensitive information with Chinese national intelligence services, echoing concerns that led to nationwide bans being considered.
The lawsuit seeks compensatory and punitive damages, as well as a court order prohibiting TikTok from continuing its allegedly misleading practices. If successful, the lawsuit could set a precedent for other states and potentially lead to significant changes in TikTok's practices regarding child safety and data security.
