Get ready to witness a fresh coat of AI paint with OpenAI's possible launch of GPT-4.5 in the near future, potentially as soon as next week. According to leaks, tech giant Microsoft is rumored to be hosting this revolutionary update, though an official announcement might take longer. If this isn't enough to spark excitement, GPT-5 might make its debut as early as May!
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman hinted at the upcoming changes in a post on February 12, suggesting free, unlimited chat access for users to the "standard intelligence setting" of GPT-5. To further enhance its fact-checking abilities, GPT-5 will incorporate the o3 reasoning model. This update is expected to broaden the model's availability, ensuring it reaches a wide audience.
Microsoft, with its annual developer conference, Microsoft Build, scheduled for May 22, might jump at the chance to unveil GPT-5. Last year, they introduced the Copilot+ line of PCs, and with the integration of AI processing, the company has been gradually enhancing its Copilot experience. With the inclusion of GPT-5, Microsoft could take its AI capabilities to a new level, potentially boosting user interaction with its various apps, including Windows 11.
While Altman provided some vague details about how he plans to structure access to GPT-5, current Plus subscribers can expect an upgrade to a higher level of intelligence, while Pro subscribers will experience an even more sophisticated version. OpenAI has also revealed plans to make Deep Research, their tool designed for generating long-form reports, more widely available and tailored to users' specific needs.
GPT-4.5, or Orion, is OpenAI's final non-chain-of-thought model, indicating a transition towards unified intelligence models. Integrating the o3 reasoning model with GPT, the company may likely promote its achievements in artificial general intelligence (AGI), or an algorithm capable of "thinking." Of course, OpenAI's definition of AGI is different from a typical understanding of intelligence.
However, I'm hesitant to call the proposed updates revolutionary, as improvements in reasoning and benchmarks might not necessarily result in tangible developments that significantly change user interaction with AI. As recently as last month, companies such as OpenAI and others in the AI sector found themselves playing catch-up after the introduction of DeepSeek, a Chinese AI model with impressive benchmarks at a lower development cost. OpenAI and Microsoft now have the opportunity to demonstrate their innovation with GPT-4.5 and GPT-5.
