Apple bolsters user security through potent new data protection measures
Apple has announced a series of new security features aimed at enhancing the protection of users' data, both on devices and in the iCloud. These new additions join a suite of other protections that make Apple products the most secure on the market.
One of the key new features is Advanced Data Protection for iCloud, which provides Apple's highest level of cloud data security. For users who opt in, this feature keeps most iCloud data protected even in the case of a data breach in the iCloud. iCloud already protects 14 sensitive data categories using end-to-end encryption by default, and for users who enable Advanced Data Protection, the total number of data categories protected using end-to-end encryption rises to 23. This includes iCloud Backup, Photos, Notes, and more.
Another new feature is Security Keys for Apple ID. This allows users the option to require a physical security key to sign in to their Apple ID account. With Security Keys, users must provide a hardware security key as one of the two factors for two-factor authentication, enhancing security against phishing scams. Apple's Security Keys feature allows users to use third-party hardware security keys to enhance their two-factor authentication, which is the most widely used two-factor account security system in the world.
The need for enhanced security for users' data in the iCloud is more urgent than ever, as demonstrated by the increase in data breaches over the past few years, exposing billions of personal records. Apple is committed to addressing this need, and these new features are part of the company's ongoing effort to provide users with even stronger ways to protect their data.
iMessage Contact Key Verification is another new feature designed to verify that users are communicating only with whom they intend. This feature will be available globally in 2023. Advanced Data Protection for iCloud is available in the US today for members of the Apple Beta Software Program, and will be available to US users by the end of the year. The feature will start rolling out to the rest of the world in early 2023.
Security Keys for Apple ID will also be available globally in early 2023. The global availability of iMessage Contact Key Verification will begin on September 12, 2023. Apple's products are known to be the most secure on the market, and the company is committed to strengthening both device and iCloud security, and adding new protections over time.
These new features are designed for users who face concerted threats to their online accounts, such as celebrities, journalists, and members of government. However, all users can benefit from the enhanced security these features provide. Apple's ongoing commitment to security ensures that users can trust their devices and their data with the company.
