Asahi's Distribution Crippled by Ransomware Attack, Stockouts Loom

Asahi Group, Japan's leading drinks producer, is grappling with a severe cyberattack that has disrupted its distribution network. Major retailers warn of stockouts within a week, with some stores potentially running dry as early as this weekend.

The attack, launched by the notorious Lockbit ransomware group on September 29, has not affected production at Asahi's 30 factories. However, it has brought distribution to a standstill, halting order processing and shipping operations across Japan. As a temporary measure, Asahi is trialing paper-based systems to manage orders and deliveries.

The impact on popular beverages like Asahi Super Dry is significant. Bars, supermarkets, and convenience stores are bracing for shortages, with some expecting to deplete their stocks by Saturday. The company's systems remain offline, and there's no immediate indication of when normal operations will resume.

Asahi Group, a global giant in the drinks industry, is working to mitigate the effects of the cyberattack. Retailers and consumers alike await updates on the recovery of the company's systems and the restoration of supplies.
