Renault has made a name for itself reinventing classics, such as the successful R5 E-Tech. In pursuit of more sales, the automaker has now resurrected its beloved 4L for a modern spin! The original 4L was a game-changer, selling over 8 million units worldwide from 1961 to 1992 with its popular, affordable, and versatile appeal. Coincidentally, Renault stepped up with the R4, set for release this summer, but don't expect a carbon copy!

This new R4 ditches the vintage roots and leaps into the small SUV category, electric and significantly larger (4.14 m long) than the R5, despite sharing the same technical underpinnings. The R4's increased size creates a more spacious cabin, a roomier trunk (420 liters), making it more family-friendly than city-centric folk who are more likely drawn to the R5, as they usually don't require much room in the back.
So, what's the deal with this electric SUV version of the R4? - #WhoIsTheR4For?
Renault shared their insight on the target customer profiles for the R4:
- Families: Primarily young couples with young children who desire a practical urban vehicle with ample cargo space for family outings.
- Nostalgic Ride Enthusiasts: Boomer and Gen X drivers with a soft spot for classic Renault models, lured by the design and comfort factors.
- Entrepreneurs: Busy business folk who drive extensively for work, with frequent stop-overs for meetings.
The R4 boasts plenty of safety features to appeal to these prospects. With 26 driver assistance systems aboard, it offers intelligent cruise control, exit alert, rescue QR code, hands-free parking assistant, One Pedal mode, and a shareable virtual key.
With an official range of 400 kilometers, the R4 promises to cater to daily, mixed, or professional trips in the peri-urban area, as long as you manage charging sensibly and avoid highways. Plus, up to €4,000 in eco-bonus and tax incentives can significantly bring down the purchase cost.
Want to know the R4's price tag? Starting at €29,990 (excluding eco-bonus), it's €2,000 more than the entry-level price of the R5, giving you a glimpse of the trade-off between style, eco-friendliness, and practicality.
