Assessment Tool for Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS)

The Driver Monitoring System (DMS) Evaluation Tool is a comprehensive device designed to test and validate distraction detection technologies, ensuring compliance with the European Union's General Safety Regulation (EU GSR) and Euro NCAP standards.

This tool is equipped with advanced features that enable it to monitor driver distraction levels and attention status, adhering to the EU and Euro NCAP standards mandated from 2026 onwards. These standards require effective driver attention monitoring for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) such as lane keeping and speed assistance.

One of the key features of the DMS Evaluation Tool is its support for standardized testing scenarios. It aligns with regulatory test procedures, focusing on driver states that affect system safety performance. This includes realistic and repeatable test cases mapping to EU GSR’s and Euro NCAP’s attention monitoring standards, ensuring systems respond accurately when the driver is distracted.

The tool's hardware is designed to integrate seamlessly with sensors capable of monitoring facial cues such as eye closure, head position, and facial movement. Typical hardware involves IR cameras or near-infrared sensors that capture driver biometric data in real time to detect fatigue or distraction states.

In addition to distraction detection, the tool validates integration with other ADAS functions such as lane keeping assist (LKA) and intelligent speed assistance (ISA) to verify safe system behavior when the driver is distracted or inattentive.

The DMS Evaluation Tool can be used in both simulation-based and real-world environments, allowing for scalable and repeatable testing conditions for diverse driving scenarios that challenge driver monitoring systems to detect distraction and ensure proper alerts or interventions.

The tool also includes a 15" touchscreen, Smarteye Pro 4 cam DX 60Hz eye tracking cameras, Logitech Wireless Touch Keyboard K400 Plus, two RGB cameras for recording the driver and instrument cluster, an XS Lav USB-C microphone, and an external hard disk (Samsung 870 EVO 4000GB 2.5" Serial ATA-600).

Furthermore, the tool supports Advanced Driver Distraction Warning (ADDW) and Driver Drowsiness and Attention Warning (DDAW) from General Safety Regulations. It also includes ELGATO Facecam PRO and ELGATO Facecam MK.2, and even goes as far as detecting and distinguishing between Owl and Lizard movements.

The tool is designed to fit all car models, including Left hand drive and Right hand Drive, and it is open source, allowing for customization of scenarios. Additionally, a GNSS receiver records vehicle speed, and a microphone and inertial measurement unit are used for recording DMS alerts. A report is created after testing, and the CarPC - NUVO-9204VTC is part of the software.

In summary, the Driver Monitoring System Evaluation Tool focuses on testing and verifying the accuracy and reliability of distraction detection, using regulatory-aligned scenarios and sensor hardware integration to support compliance with EU GSR and Euro NCAP driver attention monitoring mandates starting from 2026. It underpins both system safety validation and regulatory certification processes for ADAS featuring driver monitoring functions.
