Austrian Businesses Face Growing Cyber Threat, Report Warns
Austrian businesses face a growing threat from cyber attacks, with around a third experiencing at least one network or data breach. Larger companies, in particular, are vulnerable, with many falling victim to repeated attacks.
The Austrian Chamber of Commerce's latest report reveals a worrying trend. In the past five years, 32% of companies have encountered cyber attacks or data theft, a 10% increase from the previous year. Larger companies, with an annual turnover exceeding 51 million euros, are especially at risk, with 33% experiencing repeated attacks.
Phishing is the most common attack method, affecting 73% of victims, followed by malware (44%) and ransomware (19%). Finance, sales, and management departments are the primary targets. Despite these threats, only 9% of companies invest more than 25,000 euros annually in cybersecurity.
AI in cyber defense is underutilised, with only 15% of companies currently using it. However, around a third plan to adopt such technologies in the future. Regular vulnerability tests, a crucial protective measure, are not conducted by 31% of companies. Many businesses lack a comprehensive cybersecurity strategy, relying instead on piecemeal, uncoordinated defensive measures.
The risk of cyber attacks is perceived as high by 47% of companies, up from 35% the previous year. As attacks become more frequent and sophisticated, it is crucial for Austrian businesses to strengthen their cybersecurity measures, invest in robust IT security, and adopt advanced technologies to protect their data and networks.
