Avoid Interpreting the Creature Commandos' DCU Batman Role Incorrectly, Advocates James Gunn
This week's episode of Creature Commandos delved into the backstory of Dr. Phosphorus, set in Gotham. Following the slaughter of his family and the acquisition of radioactive skeletal abilities, he waged war against the mob and eventually joined their ranks.
Enter: Batman.
Briefly, we catch a glimpse of Batman on a rooftop, where it's assumed he apprehends the doctor, leading to his incarceration in Belle Reve. Fans of the DCU are in a frenzy, trying to decipher every detail from the cryptic appearance. So far, we've gathered:
- The DCU Batman bears a resemblance to Ben Affleck's Batfleck in the DCEU.
- The DCU Batman dons briefs like Superman.
- The DCU Batman sports white eyes.
However, as James Gunn points out, it's dangerous to draw definitive conclusions from this generic silhouette, which was intentionally designed to exude anonymity regarding the DCU's Batman. Gunn explains:
- He opted for an unassuming design to avoid committing to any specific appearance for DCU’s Batman, as it was still far from making its live-action debut.
- Gunn regards Batman as the most popular superhero globally and maintains that the depiction in Creature Commandos is distinct from Robert Pattinson's portrayal in The Batman, despite rumors of shared universes.
- Gunn confirms that they won't explore another origin story for Batman, who will already be a recognized figure within the DCU, adopting a similar approach as they did with Superman.
In my opinion, this version of DCU Batman will likely be beefier, possibly even comparably blue-grey, aligning with Gunn's love for specific comic book aesthetics. In the comic book The Brave and the Bold, Batman sported a blue-grey suit with trunks, and it wouldn't be surprising if Gunn chose to preserve that look, albeit with adjustments. Nonetheless, I doubt Batman's explanation for wearing trunks will mirror Superman's quest to appear less intimidating to kids.
As for the arrival of DCU Batman in the anticipated Brave and Bold movie, there have been conflicting reports. Gunn insists the film is not delayed, while director Andy Muschietti has suggested it's "postponed," potentially leading to another project first. At this rate, the film might not debut until 2028 or later, past the rescheduled release of The Batman 2 in late 2027. Nevertheless, the DC universe has ample time to introduce its major characters over the following decade, given the long-term commitment of WB.

In response to the intriguing appearance of the DCU Batman in Creature Commandos, DCU Batman enthusiasts are speculating about potential connections to Batman films like 'The Batman,' starring Robert Pattinson. Despite sharing some distinctive features with Ben Affleck's Batfleck, the DCU Batman maintains a unique identity within the DCU.
Amidst the excitement, fans have already identified several distinctive elements of the DCU Batman's attire, including a resemblance to briefs like Superman's and distinctive white eyes. As DCU creators ponder future appearances, such as the anticipated Brave and Bold movie, debates about the DCU Batman's backstory and motivations, including the infamous trunks, continue to arise.
