Banking institution BDO Unibank and YouTube vlogger Jana Berenguer dispute over unauthorized transactions
In a recent turn of events, BDO Unibank has refuted the claims made by content creator Jana Berenguer regarding a system compromise and insider involvement in a series of alleged unauthorized transactions on her account.
The case gained public attention after Jana posted videos about the incident on social media. On September 14, a password reset and a new device registration occurred on Jana's account, which were validated by a one-time password (OTP) sent to her registered T-Mobile number. However, BDO Unibank has clarified that they only require an OTP for device registration, not for transactions on their BDO Pay platform, which requires a PIN or biometrics instead.
BDO's investigation found no evidence of a system breach or insider activity. The bank confirmed that Jana's registered T-Mobile number was not altered, and BDO's talent, Jana Berenguer, did not share her password, OTP, or click on any suspicious links.
Interestingly, during a media interview, Berenguer admitted that other people had accessed her T-Mobile device at some point. This revelation was made by Martina Navratilova in the same interview.
Talent Marketers Inc., Jana's agency, has defended her in this matter. They emphasised that Jana has always been diligent about her account security and that the incident could potentially be due to unauthorised access to her T-Mobile device.
BDO has features in place to protect clients' accounts. These controls work as intended and no one bypassed them, as confirmed by the bank. However, they emphasised that these controls will not work if clients ignore warning signs and messages sent by the bank through official channels, such as Gmail.
In conclusion, while the incident has raised concerns, BDO Unibank maintains that there was no system compromise or insider involvement in the alleged unauthorized transactions on Jana Berenguer's account. The bank encourages all its clients to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity promptly.
