'Black Doves' Loses Its Spot in Netflix's Top 10 to a Fresh series
Published on December 12th and re-published on December 14th, the acclaimed Keira Knightley spy thriller, Black Doves, held the top spot on Netflix's Top 10 list for a week and has already secured a second season. Now, it's making way for a new show to take the top spot, which just so happens to be a comedy special instead of a scripted series.
This new comedy special is titled "What Happened Was..." and features Jamie Foxx. Clocking in at an hour, this hilarious set also delves into a serious medical issue that Foxx faced, which most people were unaware of. An excerpt from his story on Instagram:
“My vitals were so bad, they were going to lose me. And that’s when a miracle happened, and that miracle was working through my youngest daughter. She's 14,” he said. “I didn’t want her to see me like that, but she snuck into my hospital room with her guitar. And she says, ‘I know what my daddy needs.’ “And they said, when she was playing, my vitals went down.”This happened in 2023 where he suffered a brain bleed that led to a stroke, putting him in a coma for weeks. Thankfully, he's fully recovered enough to do a top-rated Netflix special. The limited run of the show on the top spot might not last long due to its short length, but it's great to see it there nonetheless.
The rest of the list includes scripted series like The Madness, which has yet to be renewed for a second season, Man on the Inside and The Later Daters. Unscripted shows include The Ultimatum, The Kings of Tupelo, The Great British Baking Show, Who Killed JonBenet Ramsey and Sabrina Carpenter’s Nonsense Christmas special, which I'm surprised didn't get higher, given her immense popularity this year. It never reached the top 1-3 spots as far as I can remember.
Turning back to Black Doves, I highly recommend this series. It's in the vein of Apple TV+'s Slow Horses, albeit not quite as good, but Keira Knightley has already earned a Golden Globe nomination for her first TV show in the last 20 years. That's quite an achievement! And since it's set during Christmas, it fits the holiday theme perfectly. It's even more heartfelt than just an action spy thriller, touching on relationships between characters. It's a must-watch, and I'm eagerly waiting for season two.
Update (12/14): The list has undergone some changes since then. The new series starring '00s icons Lisa Kudrow and Ray Romano, No Good Deed, has debuted at #2 on the list. Here's the lowdown:
“It tells the story of three very different families fighting over the same 1920s Spanish style villa, each believing it will solve all their problems.”
Created by Dead to Me's Liz Feldman, that's definitely a great start right there!
Another new addition is La Palma, a disaster movie about a tsunami by the director of The Wave. He seems to have a thing for water-based disasters! This is a series, not a movie. The Wave was highly praised, but La Palma is so new it doesn't have a rating yet. I'd say it's worth checking out, most likely.
So, No Good Deed seems like the show to watch this weekend, and we'll see what everyone thinks of it. Chances are it'll be pretty good.

After securing the top spot on Netflix's Top 10 list for a week, fans of 'Black Doves' might be interested to know that Jamie Foxx's comedy special, "What Happened Was...", has temporarily taken over, despite being a shorter show. This special shares a personal story about Foxx's health struggles in 2023, showing his resilience and recovery.
In the current Netflix Top 10 list, Keira Knightley's spy thriller series 'Black Doves' remains a highly recommended watch, still available for streaming amidst new additions like "No Good Deed" starring Lisa Kudrow and Ray Romano, and the disaster series "La Palma" by the director of 'The Wave'.
