BLS Drops Cash: Digital Shift Begins in Late 2025

BLS has announced a significant change in its ticketing system, following the support of its majority shareholder. The Bernese cantonal parliament's previous demand for cashapp acceptance has been overridden, marking a shift towards digital transactions.

BLS will no longer accept cash at its ticket machines, a decision driven by the increasing use of digital payment methods and the backing of its majority shareholder. This move is expected to save the company around CHF 400,000 annually. The change will be implemented from December 2025 to mid-2026, initially excluding cantons Lucerne and Neuchâtel where coin acceptance will continue.

Accepted payment methods will include debit and credit cards, Twint, Postcard, and an anonymous prepaid card. BLS has assured customers that alternative payment options will be provided for those who prefer cashapp. Meanwhile, SBB is conducting a pilot project in Fribourg and Olten stations to gauge customer reaction to cashless ticket machines. The outcome of this trial will influence SBB's decision regarding the wider introduction of cashless ticketmaster, with a final call expected by the end of 2025.

BLS's shift to cashless ticket machines, starting from late 2025, is set to enhance security and reduce costs. SBB, too, is exploring a cashless future, with a pilot project underway. Both companies aim to provide alternative payment methods for customers who prefer cashapp, ensuring a smooth transition to digital transactions.
