BMW Under Fire: Tesla's Assault Unleashed

BMW is making a bold move in the electric vehicle (EV) market with its new strategy, the "Neue Klasse". This comprehensive approach aims to set a new industry standard, competing directly with Tesla and fast-moving Chinese manufacturers.

The Neue Klasse is built on a scalable, advanced electric vehicle architecture that leverages world-class technology, software, and design. BMW plans to roll out approximately 40 new or updated models, with a strong focus on electric cars that uphold BMW's "ultimate driving machine" ethos.

The flagship model of the Neue Klasse, the next-generation BMW iX3, is set for series production from late 2025. This electric SUV will be manufactured in a new, sustainable factory in Debrecen, Hungary, with additional production slated for San Luis Potosí, Mexico, by 2027.

The iX3 is expected to set new standards in range, charging speed, and efficiency, thanks to the sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology. With a charging capacity of 400 kilowatts, the iX3 can charge enough energy for around 385 kilometers in just ten minutes. It will offer a range of up to 800 kilometers.

BMW is also focusing on sustainable manufacturing. The new Debrecen plant will run solely on renewable energy, and the increased production capacity (150,000 vehicles annually in Debrecen) underlines BMW’s readiness to scale up aggressively.

In the global EV market, BMW is positioning the Neue Klasse as a response to rapidly evolving dynamics. Chinese brands like BYD and Xiaomi have gained significant traction with innovative, feature-rich, and affordable EVs, while Tesla continues to lead with technology and brand strength. BMW’s approach targets these competitors by rolling out a high-tech, performance-oriented, and emotionally engaging electric lineup rooted in its legacy but clearly designed for the future.

The success of BMW’s new strategy will be heavily influenced by its performance in the Chinese market. BMW AG is facing tough competition in China, particularly from local manufacturers like BYD and Xiaomi. However, a complete withdrawal from China is not an option for BMW CEO, Oliver Zipse, due to the country's expertise and innovation.

Zipse has been pragmatic about unprofitable market segments, stating that BMW will withdraw if necessary. He subtly criticized Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, by stating that BMW focuses on offering products that customers are proud to drive, without having to justify their choice.

All future vehicles from BMW will be based on a single, state-of-the-art architecture. This architecture will include powerful software and central computers, and models will incorporate advanced features like bidirectional charging, allowing vehicles to act as energy storage devices, enhancing energy management and convenience for users.

The upcoming electric SUV from BMW is named iX3. BMW is betting everything on the "New Class" for its future. By the end of 2027, only electric vehicles will roll off the assembly line at BMW's Munich headquarters, marking the end of a 75-year era of internal combustion engines.

BMW remains the favourite of AKTIONÄR among German automakers. The company is exploiting the weaknesses of its competitors in the battle for market share, aiming to redefine its future with a bold, large-scale investment into a new modular platform for electrification.
