BMW's First Dedicated EV Plant in Hungary Begins Production

BMW Group has inaugurated its first plant dedicated solely to electric vehicles, located in Debrecen, Hungary. This facility is also the first of its kind in Central Europe. It began pre-production in 2022 and will commence full-scale customer vehicle production in late October 2023.

Spread over 400 hectares, the plant has created over 2,000 direct jobs and will have an annual production capacity of up to 150,000 vehicles at full capacity. Initially, it will produce the iX3 50 xDrive, with plans to introduce more affordable and high-performance variants later. The plant will also manufacture the iX4, with production set to begin in the near future.

The Debrecen plant houses a battery production facility for the first Neue Klasse model, utilising sixth-generation batteries with round cells. This ensures a steady supply of advanced battery technology for the vehicles produced. Additionally, starting in 2027, the San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico will also produce the iX3, but U.S.-bound models will continue to come exclusively from Hungary.

BMW Group, with nearly 160,000 employees across over 30 production and assembly plants worldwide at the end of 2022, has shown resilience in the face of stock market fluctuations. In the second quarter of 2025, despite an 8.17% decline in revenue compared to the previous year, global deliveries grew by about 2.5% in the first quarter of 2025. This growth, along with a long-wheelbase iX3 planned for the Chinese market in 2024, signals the company's commitment to the electric vehicle market.

The Debrecen plant, running entirely on renewable energy, signifies BMW Group's dedication to sustainable mobility. With its initial production of the iX3 and planned expansion, it is set to contribute significantly to the company's global electric vehicle output. The plant's success will be crucial in BMW Group's continued growth in the electric vehicle market.
