Bre.Bike's Phenomenal Success: Bremen's City Bike-Sharing System Doubles in Size in Six Months
Bremen's city bike-sharing program, Bre.Bike, launched six months ago by Nextbike GmbH, has proven a resounding success. The system, which began with 1,000 bicycles and offered free trials, now boasts over 1,450 standard bikes and 40 cargo bicycles, serving over 26,000 registered users.
The Bre.Bike system, operational since April 2025, has seen remarkable growth. It initially started with 1,000 bicycles, but this number has since doubled. The system now includes over 40 bike-sharing stations, with more locations planned. This expansion has led to a surge in usage, with over 250,000 rentals to date, including a record 60,000 in August alone.
Nextbike GmbH, the operator of Bre.Bike, also runs similar systems in Nürnberg and other cities within the VRN region. The company has a five-year concession to operate the Bre.Bike system in Bremen. The city finances the system through the mobility construction local law (MobBauOG) using redemption amounts.
The success of Bre.Bike has transformed urban mobility in Bremen. With over 26,000 users and counting, the system has proven its value. Nextbike GmbH continues to expand the network, aiming to make Bre.Bike an integral part of Bremen's transportation landscape.
