In the world of electric vehicles (EVs), news about the latest models is always exciting. This time, the focus is on BYD's Sealion 6 SUV, which has recently launched a fully electric version in China, with rumours of an imminent launch.

The new electric Sealion 6, built on BYD’s latest e-Platform 3.0 Evo architecture, will be available in single and dual-motor variants. The single motor version offers a power output of 170 kW or 180 kW, while the dual motor version boosts it up to a combined output of 290 kW[1]. This is significantly higher than the current Australian Sealion 6 PHEV, which has a 160 kW motor combined with a 1.5-litre engine delivering up to 74 kW.

Riz Akhtar, a mechanical engineer with a passion for EVs and the founder of carloop, a company specialising in Australian EV data, insight reports, and trends, has been driving a red Tesla Model 3[2]. However, with the arrival of the fully electric Sealion 6, he might be tempted to take a closer look.

In Australia, BYD began deliveries of the Sealion 6 PHEV in 2024, and it has been a strong seller with over nine thousand orders received. However, as of July 2025, there has been no official confirmation or announcement from BYD Australia about the launch of the fully electric Sealion 6 EV[3]. The company is instead focusing on launching other new models soon, such as the Atto 2 small electric SUV by early 2026 and the Sealion 8 plug-in hybrid seven-seater SUV.

The new Sealion 6 PHEV will come with side repeater cameras as part of its exterior styling. These cameras are likely to be part of BYD's "God's Eye" smart driving tech, providing a 360-degree view around the vehicle[1].

While the fully electric Sealion 6 exists and is imminent in China, its Australian launch remains unconfirmed. Given BYD’s expanding EV lineup and growing market presence in Australia, it is possible that the fully electric Sealion 6 EV may be considered for launch in the near future.

  1. The news about the imminent launch of the fully electric Sealion 6 in Australia might attract interest from industries like finance, as investors may be keen on investing in the automotive sector if BYD decides to introduce this electric model in the country.
  2. The technology behind the new Sealion 6, such as the "God's Eye" smart driving tech, could revolutionize transportation across various sectors, potentially attracting attention from tech-focused industries seeking innovative solutions for their fleets.
