'Carry-On' Stepped Down from Netflix's Top 10 Rankings, Ousted by a Fresh Film
After almost three weeks on Netflix's top movie chart, Carry-On was knocked off its throne by a fresh release. The Taron Egerton/Jason Bateman thriller has become one of Netflix's most-watched films in a short span, making it an ideal choice for older teens and adults to watch during the holidays.
Now, it has slid down to number 3, with two non-Netflix productions taking the upper positions. The surprising new number 1 film is 2015's Heart of the Sea, starring Chris Hemsworth, Cillian Murphy, and Tom Holland. Despite their current fame, this movie isn't particularly impressive with a 42% critic score and a faint 54% audience rating. Here's the summary:
"In 1820, sailors (Chris Hemsworth, Benjamin Walker, Cillian Murphy) on board the New England ship, Essex, encounter a daunting battle for survival when a gigantic, powerful whale attacks and cripples their vessel, leaving them stranded at sea. Faced with storms, starvation, panic, and despair, the survivors are forced to make unconscionable choices to survive. Their story ultimately inspires author Herman Melville to write 'Moby-Dick.'"
Admittedly, that sounds intriguing. I'm a bit curious, I suppose, and the star-studded cast is impressive, so I can understand why people are interested.
At number 2, we have a more recent release, Kevin Costner's Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1. This self-financed project, which led to Costner leaving the hit series Yellowstone, didn't fare well in theaters, grossing only $38 million globally. Although it's supposed to be part of an epic saga (as the title suggests), it remains to be seen if that will materialize. At least, it seems to be doing well on streaming, which isn't insignificant.
However, the movie that has truly caught my attention is Furiosa, which I would place at the top of 2024's best sci-fi movies, even above Dune Part 2 (both were exceptional). Furiosa is currently at number 4, and just behind it at number 5 is another impressive sci-fi movie, Interstellar. I can't recommend number 6, The Watchers, as I found it enormously dull and even ended up turning it off, which isn't something I usually do.
I think once people realize that Heart of the Sea isn't as great as they thought, it won't stay at the top for long. I'm guessing that Horizon will have a broader audience and its ratings are pretty good, so it might take the number 1 spot soon. Carry-On's moment in the spotlight seems to be over.

Pick up my sci-fi novels: the Herokiller series and The Earthborn Trilogy.
Despite Heart of the Sea's current reign as Netflix's top 10 film, its less than impressive critic score and audience rating might prompt viewers to explore alternative options. Netflix users might be intrigued to explore the rise of Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1, a self-financed project by Kevin Costner, currently at number 2.
