Celebrating the Festive Season: It seems like just yesterday we were laughing and making memories, yet here we are again, basking in the joy of the holidays!

One year ago, I began writing for our website blog, drawn in by the company's focus on people. In my inaugural piece, I highlighted the human-centric approach as a key factor.

As stated on the website's main page, the human element is crucial in today's digital landscape, where cloud processing power and network bandwidth pose genuine dangers. These dangers are exacerbated by the increasing believability of copycat content generated by artificial intelligence.

However, it's important to note that cybercriminals today are primarily motivated by financial gain, intellectual property theft, industrial espionage, and fraud, rather than the social, technical, or political frustrations that fueled early malware writers.

Cybercriminals have not forgotten the importance of humans in computer security, leading to the development of various tactics such as human-led attacks, living off the land, social engineering, initial access brokers, and others that exploit the combination of automation and human artifice.

Despite these challenges, by focusing on the basics, we can make life harder for cybercriminals. To help, our website has compiled seven community-focused articles offering practical, human-centric advice on combating cybercrime:

  1. To strengthen the security gap, consider sharing tips on how to identify and prevent fake LinkedIn account registrations.
  2. In case of unlocked phone theft, be vigilant about potential privacy breaches beyond the monetary loss of the device.
  3. Understand what constitutes fair and reasonable data collection when your car is the collector.
  4. Educate yourself and others on recognizing and avoiding romance scams, and keeping vulnerable friends and family safe.
  5. Assess the real risk associated with QR codes, considering whether vendors' warnings are overblown.
  6. Develop the ability to identify and teach others to spot potential scams in their email inbox.
  7. Prepare for ransomware blackmail attacks by investing in preventive measures, as response efforts are typically less effective.

Enjoy these articles, and have a safe and enjoyable holiday season. Remember, if you're interested in our podcast, 'Tales from the SOC,' featuring insightful discussions between our CIO and Head of Operations, David Emerson, be sure to give it a listen.

In the realm of current technology, cybersecurity remains a critical concern due to the increasing reliance on automation and artificial intelligence, which can create convincing copycat content, thus necessitating continued education-and-self-development. To equip ourselves against such threats, our website offers seven community-focused articles that provide practical advice on human-centric cybersecurity. These include articles on strengthening security practices, recognizing and avoiding scams, understanding data collection, and preparing for ransomware attacks, as well as an optional mention of other reputable resources like the ERMProtect blog and other cybersecurity experts.
