Certified Onyx LED Screens from Samsung Now Accessible in US and European Markets
Revised Article:
Samsung's cutting-edge Onyx LED megascreens, boasting true black levels, high dynamic range-friendly brightness, and native 4K resolutions, are now available for installation in cinemas across Europe and the U.S. This move expands the reach of Onyx's unique features to a global audience, following its debuts at CineEurope 2025 and CinemaCon 2025.
While Onyx screens have been installed in a handful of South Korean theaters for years, Samsung seems to be finally ready to conquer the world stage. The latest DCI-certified Onyx screens come with enticing 10-year warranties and are available in standard sizes of 5, 10, 14, and 20 meters, with flexible scaling options as well. They boast native 4K resolutions and can play films at frame rates up to 120Hz, potentially paving the way for filmmakers to experiment with higher frame rates.
Onyx screens use self-emissive panels, allowing them to deliver near-perfect black levels, richer colors, and brighter peaks than traditional projectors. This opens up the possibility for wider use of high dynamic range mastering in theatrical releases.
The real question, however, is the availability of content that truly makes the most of Onyx's unique capabilities. Han cycled through It: Chapter One on one of the earliest Samsung LED cinemas during a trip to South Korea, and he can attest to this issue's importance. Onyx stands a chance of thriving in the global cinema market if studios start specifically mastering content for it.
It's encouraging to know that Pixar Animation Studios, a major Hollywood player, seems increasingly dedicated to delivering their theatrical releases in a 4K HDR format compatible with Samsung Onyx. Elio, Pixar's newest animated film, is set to premiere on June 18, and it will be available in the Onyx-supported 4K DCI HDR format. Pixar even plans to install an Onyx display at their Emeryville campus in California for evaluating HDR color and brightness, conducting theatrical content quality tests, and hosting screening for filmmakers.
"Samsung's Onyx screens allow our Pixar artists to present their stories exactly as they visualized them - vivid, dynamic, and true to life," says Jessie Schroeder, VP Post Production at Pixar Animation Studios. "By mastering our films in HDR with Onyx, we continue to unlock a new level of visual storytelling for filmmakers and deliver the next generation of cinematic experiences for our audiences."
Catch a glimpse of the Onyx screen at Samsung's booth at the CineEurope 2025 event in Barcelona until June 19. You can also visit the Pathé Palace cinema in Paris or the Culver City Theater in Los Angeles, where Onyx screens are already up and running.
