BYD, a leading Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, has announced its entry into the Pakistani market with plans to assemble electric vehicles (EVs) in a factory near Karachi. The factory, built in collaboration with Mega Motor Company, is expected to begin operations next year.

The factory, which began construction in April 2025, will initially operate on a two-shift system with an annual production capacity of 25,000 units. Initially, the factory will assemble imported components and produce some non-electric parts locally. BYD's first electric vehicle assembled in Pakistan is expected to roll out by July or August 2026.

BYD made its Pakistani debut in August 2024, launching three models: the all-electric Atto 3, the Seal EV, and the hybrid Sealion 6. Sales of these imported EVs have already exceeded internal targets by 30 percent. The company aims to capture a 30 percent to 35 percent share in the Pakistani electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle sector.

The move into Pakistan is part of BYD's strategy to meet the growing demand in emerging markets and take advantage of incentives offered by the Pakistani government. Khaliq, an industry expert, expects the market size for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in Pakistan to grow three to four times in 2025 from about 1,000 units in 2024.

However, BYD's expansion plans have faced some setbacks. Reuters reports that BYD has suspended plans to build a major car plant in Mexico due to geopolitical tensions. Moreover, the Shark 6, initially launched in Mexico under the name BYD Shark, is not available in the Chinese market and has been renamed Shark 6 in several overseas markets. In China, the Atto 3 is known as the Yuan Plus, and the Sealion 6 is called the Song Plus DM-i.

BYD may also consider exporting vehicles from the Pakistani factory to right-hand drive countries in the region based on freight costs and business economics. The factory's initial production will be focused on the domestic market in Pakistan.

BYD's entry into the Pakistani market marks a significant step in the company's global expansion strategy. With its focus on electric vehicles and its commitment to sustainable and affordable transportation solutions, BYD is well-positioned to contribute to Pakistan's growing EV market.
