Kaiserslautern, a city in southwest Germany, is partnering with OXG Fiber GmbH to usher in a new era of digital connectivity. This partnership marks the beginning of a significant project aimed at bringing the largest open-access fiber optic network to the city, with an investment of up to 7 billion euros.

OXG Fiber GmbH, a joint venture founded in 2023 by Vodafone and Altice, plans to connect up to 7 million households across Germany, including over 32,600 households in Kaiserslautern. The fiber rollout is free for property owners and residents, focusing on urban housing stock.

The fiber optic connection is a free service for both property owners and residents, offering high-speed internet to enhance digital lifestyles. Existing DSL and cable contracts can continue to be used during the fiber optic expansion, providing flexibility for residents. Property owners can choose to switch to fiber optic internet at a later time, with the transition being straightforward and uncomplicated.

The open nature of the OXG fiber optic network allows residents to freely choose their internet service provider, fostering competition and ensuring the best services are available. Christina Löhmann, Senior Key Account Manager for Municipalities, offers a free connection to the open fiber optic network during the construction phase.

The fiber optic expansion project in Kaiserslautern includes cooperation with the Baugenossenschaft Bahnheim eG. The fiber optic cable is laid underground from the property boundary to each residential unit during the expansion. However, the prerequisite for a fiber optic connection is the consent of the property owners.

Manuel Steinbrenner, Deputy Mayor of Kaiserslautern, supports the fiber optic expansion as crucial for meeting digital demands. He believes this initiative will significantly improve the city's digital infrastructure, making it more attractive for businesses and residents alike.

Vodafone, 1&1, and Bahnhof Network are among the providers that will market end-customer products via the OXG fiber optic network. Construction of OXG's fiber optic expansion in Kaiserslautern has begun, and the project is expected to serve approximately 32,600 households.

For more information about the expansion, interested parties can visit the website www.oxg.de/kaiserslautern. They can also give their consent for the expansion digitally via the link www.oxg.de/zustimmen during the construction phase. Timo Anschütz, board member of Baugenossenschaft Bahnheim eG, sees the fiber optic expansion as combining tradition with the future.

It's important to note that the fiber optic expansion does not require residents to immediately switch to fiber optic; existing telecommunications connections can continue to be used. This gives residents time to make an informed decision about their internet service provider and when they wish to transition to the new fiber optic network.

This partnership between Kaiserslautern and OXG Fiber GmbH is a significant step towards a more connected and digital future for the city. With high-speed internet becoming increasingly essential, this initiative is expected to significantly improve the quality of life for Kaiserslautern's residents and businesses.
