Completed development of laser defence system in Israel
The Ministry of Defense in Israel has announced the successful completion of the development of a ground-breaking laser defense weapon, 'Iron Beam'. This new system, which is set to revolutionise Israel's defense capabilities, is a significant achievement according to Israeli Defense Minister, Israel Katz, who described it as a 'historic milestone'.
'Iron Beam' is a ground-based laser air defense system that promises to be a cost-effective solution compared to the multi-stage missile defense system currently used by Israel. The first systems of this new laser defense weapon are expected to be integrated into the Israeli air defense by the end of the year.
The new system boasts quick neutralisation of threats with precise targeting technology and high efficiency. According to US reports, 'Iron Beam' can neutralise drones for approximately four dollars per shot. The operating costs of 'Iron Beam' are very low, making it an attractive addition to Israel's defense arsenal.
Israeli Defense Minister Katz stated that enemies from various regions should know that Israel is strong in defense and attack, and will protect the security of Israeli citizens. The successful completion of the development and testing phase is considered a 'decisive milestone' before the system is handed over to the army for operational use.
During the testing phase, prototypes of tactical short-range lasers, including 'Iron Beam', have already been used in the current war and have intercepted dozens of threats. The new laser defense system, tested over several weeks, can intercept missiles, mortars, aircraft, and drones in various scenarios.
Israel is the first country to possess a system like 'Iron Beam'. The development of this laser defense system was a collaborative effort between Israeli defense companies Elbit Systems and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, who began the project in 2014 and were reported to be close to market introduction as of March 2025.
As Israel prepares to integrate 'Iron Beam' into its air defense, the country reaffirms its commitment to maintaining a strong defense system to safeguard its citizens and territories.
