The Tesla Model Y maintained its dominance in the global electric vehicle (EV) market in August, with a staggering 99,290 units delivered, according to recent data. However, the landscape of the EV industry is evolving, and the Li Auto L6 joined the top 20 with 88,963 deliveries, suggesting a growing competitive environment.
In the global sales ranking, following the Model Y, the top EVs in August included the Tesla Model 3, Chevrolet Equinox EV, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, BMW i4, Ford F-150 Lightning, Tesla Cybertruck, and Chevrolet Blazer EV. The VW ID.4, the only model from a European OEM in the top 20, placed 17th.
While Tesla's Model Y held the top spot for several years, it was edged out in 2024 by the Toyota RAV4 (a hybrid, not all-electric) by a narrow margin. Despite a sales dip in mid-2024 to 2025, the Model Y remains the leading pure EV globally. The Model 3 remains strong in ninth place worldwide sales, and other key EVs like BYD Qin also feature in top sales lists.
Regional markets such as Norway continue to see strong EV adoption, with the Model Y among the top sellers there, despite increasing competition from European brands. The Chinese market also played a significant role in the increase of plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) sales.
The Wuling Bingo delivered 22,323 units, placing it 12th, while the BYD Song came second with 65,274 deliveries. Interestingly, BYD placed 11 models in the top 20 in August. The Aito M9, expected to jump several positions across the remainder of the year, finished in 16th place, overcoming rivals from Li Auto and the BYD Han.
The Geely Galaxy E5 recorded 12,227 deliveries in its first full month, aiming to become a best-seller in the top 20. The Aito M9, currently in 16th place, is expected to rise further in the rankings. Battery-electric vehicle (BEV) deliveries were up 6% compared to August 2023, reaching approximately one million units. In August, EVs accounted for 22% of all new-car sales, a significant increase from previous years.
PHEV sales also saw a significant jump, with a 51% increase to roughly half a million models. The Wuling Mini EV, the best-selling EV not built by Tesla or BYD, delivered 26,464 units in August.
In summary, the global EV market continues to evolve, with Tesla's Model Y leading the way, followed by a diverse range of competitors. As sales continue to grow and new models are introduced, the race for the top spots is likely to remain intense.
The dynamics of the electric vehicle market in August revealed a competitive environment, with the Li Auto L6 joining the top 20, closely following the dominance of the Tesla Model Y. Embracing the future, various models like the Chevrolet Equinox EV, Ford Mustang Mach-E, and the BMW i4 are making their mark, highlighting the growing diversity in the industry.
Moreover, regional markets such as Norway and the Chinese market are witnessing increased adoption of electric vehicles, with rising competition from brands like Li Auto, BYD, Aito, and Geely. In this constantly evolving landscape, the race for the top spots in EV sales is expected to remain fiercely competitive in the coming months.
