Cricket icon MS Dhoni backs Acko insurance platform, affirming: 'Modern India seeks interaction with insurance sector'
Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the former Indian cricket captain, has taken a leap into the world of business by investing in Acko, a digital-first insurance platform. In addition to his strategic investment, Dhoni has also been appointed as the brand ambassador for the Bengaluru-based startup.
The partnership between Dhoni and Acko is more than just a brand collaboration, according to Acko's founder, Varun Dua. Dua sees this association as a meeting of mindsets, with Dhoni's values aligning perfectly with Acko's mission. Dhoni mirrors the values that have shaped Acko's journey: customer-first thinking, simplicity, and bold innovation.
Dhoni believes that Acko's approach reflects the way "new India" wants to engage with insurance. He finds Acko's tech-first, customer-centric approach appealing and believes that the company brings clarity where there was confusion. Dhoni has expressed his excitement to support a brand that's focused on trust and transformation.
For the financial year ending March 2024, Acko reported a revenue of Rs 2,106 crore, up nearly 20% from Rs 1,758 crore in FY23. The company has raised more than $458 million in funding, with significant investments from General Atlantic, Accel Partners, Elevation Capital, and Reliance Industries Limited.
In October 2021, Acko secured $255 million in a funding round led by General Atlantic, which currently holds a 10.7% stake. The startup offers direct-to-consumer (D2C) insurance services spanning auto, health, and travel coverage, as well as group health insurance products for employees. Acko operates on a zero-commission, zero-paperwork model, with a focus on instant claim settlements and user-friendly digital interfaces.
Dhoni represents trust, discipline, and the ability to stay calm while reinventing the game, according to Varun Dua. Together, Acko and Dhoni aim to make insurance simpler, more relatable, and truly loved by the people. Dhoni's presence is expected to boost Acko's brand visibility and trust quotient in the insurance market.
Acko has issued more than 1 billion policies and served over 78 million customers. The main sponsor of this digital insurance company is Reliance Industries Limited. With Dhoni on board, Acko is strengthening its resolve to rewrite the playbook for insurance in India.
Varun Dua stated that Dhoni's association with Acko is not just a brand collaboration but a meeting of mindsets. Dhoni's belief in Acko's values and approach makes him the perfect fit for the brand ambassador role. The partnership between Dhoni and Acko promises to bring a fresh perspective to the insurance industry in India.
