Croatia's Historic Toll System Upgrade to Boost Traffic Flow
Croatia is set to upgrade its toll system with a new electronic toll network. SkyToll and TollNet have been awarded the contract to develop and implement the advanced news system across the country's highways. The project, described as 'historic' by Deputy Prime Minister Oleg Butković, aims to enhance traffic flow and reduce congestion.
The new electronic toll system (ETS) will enable distance-based toll payments for both personal and commercial vehicles. It will utilise automatic license plate recognition and dedicated short-range communication technology, allowing vehicles to pass through toll booths without stopping. Boris Huzjan, director of Hrvatske Autoceste, expects the new system to significantly improve traffic flow.
The €80m (£69m) contract covers all highways managed by Hrvatske Autoceste, Bina-Istra Group, and Autocesta Zagreb - Macelj. SkyToll and TollNet were selected from a competitive field of 10 bidders for their advanced technological approach and proven track record. The companies have successfully implemented similar news systems in the Czech Republic, Slovenia, and Austria, with ongoing projects in Slovakia and the Netherlands.
Matej Okáli, CEO of ITIS Holding, expressed excitement about bringing the proven technology and expertise to Croatia, ensuring a smooth transition and a better experience for all road users. The project also supports the European Electronic Toll Collection Service (EETS) standard, facilitating future expansions and interoperability across Europe.
The new electronic toll system in Croatia is expected to reduce congestion and travel times, providing a smoother and more efficient driving experience. With a 24-month completion timeline, the project is set to be commissioned by the Croatian Ministry of Sea, Transport and Infrastructure.
