Customs Raid Nets 9 Illegal Workers, Employers Face Action
Customs officers across North, East, and Central Hesse have conducted inspections at 38 restaurants, inns, and snack bars. The Main Customs Office Gießen, led by spokesperson Stephanie Auerswald, targeted illegal employment, fraud, and minimum wage violations. Over 80 customs officers, supported by local tax offices, checked around 130 employment relationships. Nine men were found working illegally and taken into custody. Employers face legal action if violations are confirmed.
The inspections, part of a larger operation involving over 80 customs officers, focused on securing social systems and state revenues. They aimed to ensure fair working conditions and competitive business environments. Initial irregularities were discovered on-site, including people working without necessary permits, minimum wage underpayment, and missing social security notifications. Fraud suspicions and notification violations were also found. Criminal proceedings have been initiated against the individuals involved, and their employers also face consequences. Inspections are risk-oriented, combining random and full inspections, with focus inspections in particularly affected sectors.
