Cycle paths in Seligenstadt will be illuminated with smart LED lighting
In a move towards sustainable and safer city infrastructure, Offenbach, Germany, is expanding the use of sensor-controlled LED lights on its bike paths. The first location to receive this modern lighting solution is the Mainradweg, with plans to extend it to other bike paths in the city.
The integrated radar technology in the new lighting system adjusts the light intensity according to movement in the surrounding area, ensuring safety for cyclists and pedestrians while maximizing energy savings. When movement is detected, the brightness increases gradually, and the three nearest lights are also activated. After movement ceases, the lighting automatically dims again, using only 30% of its power, or 4.17 watts, when no one is on the path.
The city is reusing its existing LED lights instead of discarding them. The Mainradweg will not be entirely replaced with new lights but will be equipped with modern LED lighting, with the reused LED lights from the Mainradweg being used at other locations in the city. This eco-friendly approach not only saves resources but also reduces costs, as the conversion cost was approximately 44,000 euros.
The new LED lights replace older lights with higher energy consumption, such as 70-watt sodium vapor lamps or 2x11-watt energy-saving lamps. The light colour of the new LED lights is 3,000 Kelvin, which is pleasant for road users and insect-friendly.
The Mainradweg is not the first location in the city to receive sensor-controlled LED lights. The city of Seligenstadt has already installed 70 sensor-controlled LED lights on bike paths in Dudenhofer Street, Ellensee Street, and the bike path to Froschhausen.
