In a significant step towards modernizing the city's digital infrastructure, Deutsche Telekom is expanding its fiber optic network in Stuttgart. This move is part of the company's broader fixed infrastructure developments in Germany, with a focus on providing faster internet access to more households and businesses.

The expansion, which includes seven new areas for fiber optic, is set to make the district of Degerloch more future-oriented. The project involves laying around 124 kilometers of fiber optic cable and building 58 new distributors in Degerloch. This will provide fiber optic for over 8,000 households and businesses in the area.

The framework agreement with Telekom also provides for the rapid construction of a powerful 5G network in the region, reflecting a general trend toward fiber-based infrastructure supporting both fixed broadband and mobile 5G services within the city.

For those interested in the fiber optic connection, it can be booked on the Telekom website at www.telekom.de/glasfaser by entering the address in the query mask. Property owners must book a fiber optic tariff and give their consent for their house to be connected to the fiber optic network. Renters only need to book a fiber optic tariff for their house to be connected.

The city's Department of Public Works and the parties involved coordinate the individual construction phases closely to minimize inconvenience for residents. The city of Stuttgart and Telekom are working together on the expansion in Degerloch.

The Gigabit project, a partnership-based expansion of the ultra-fast fiber optic network, involves 178 municipalities in the region, including the city of Stuttgart and its five neighboring districts. The goal is to have 50% of households and all companies, as well as schools in the region, have fast internet access by the end of 2025.

By 2030, 90% of all households should have access to a fiber optic connection. As of mid-2025, Deutsche Telekom is actively expanding its fiber optic network infrastructure, including in regions such as Stuttgart, as part of broader fixed infrastructure developments in Germany.
