Delivery figures for Li Auto's electric vehicles (EREVs) drop across the board, while Mega model sees ongoing growth.

In a recent development, Li Auto, a leading Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has reported a decline in deliveries for its L-series extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) in July 2021 compared to the previous year. The decline ranged between 40% and 53% year-on-year[1].

This significant drop contributed to an overall 40% decline in Li Auto's total deliveries for that month. The L-series EREVs, which include models like the Li L6, Li L7, Li L8, and Li L9, saw a decrease in deliveries across the board.

Factors Contributing to the Decline

Key factors contributing to this decline include:

  • Brand challenges and negative public reception: Li Auto faced major challenges in protecting its brand image during this period, with a wave of negative reviews on social media platforms which likely affected consumer confidence and sales[1].
  • Product-related issues: The Li i8, part of the L-series, had a poor initial acceptance and had to be relaunched with reduced available trims and a lowered price. This indicates struggles in the product's market fit or positioning[1].
  • Company controversies: Li Auto was embroiled in public opinion controversies, including crash test disputes involving the Li Mega MPV and a truck maker, which could have further hurt public perception and sales momentum for their electric vehicles [1].

Li Mega MPV's Strong Sales Performance

In contrast to the L-series EREVs, Li Auto's Li Mega MPV experienced a strong sales performance in the same period, with deliveries increasing by 330% year-on-year in July 2021[1]. This sharp rise suggests the MPV was better received or met different market demands successfully, offsetting some of the declines from other models.

Monthly Deliveries of Li Auto's Models

  • The Li L6, Li Auto's most affordable model, delivered 14,830 vehicles in July, making it the best-selling model and accounting for 48.26% of Li Auto's total deliveries. However, it experienced a year-on-year decrease of 40.34% and a month-on-month decrease of 9.96%.
  • The Li L7 delivered 6,237 vehicles in July, down 45.30% year-on-year and 24.61% from June, accounting for 20.30% of Li Auto's deliveries in July.
  • The Li L8 delivered 3,088 units in July, down 53.16% year-on-year and 28.82% month-on-month, accounting for 10.05% of Li Auto's monthly deliveries.
  • The Li L9 delivered 3,760 units in July, down 49.83% year-on-year and down 23.16% from June.

Li Mega's Performance

  • Deliveries of the updated L series began on May 9, and deliveries of the updated Li Mega began on May 23. In the first seven months of the year, the Li Mega delivered 8,621 units, contributing 3.67% of Li Auto's deliveries during the same period. In July, the Li Mega saw a 330% year-on-year increase in deliveries, delivering 2,816 units, marking the second-highest monthly delivery volume in its history. This represents a year-on-year increase of 330.58% and a month-on-month increase of 22.22% for the Li Mega in July.

Upcoming Launch

Li Auto launched its first pure electric SUV, the Li i8, on July 29, with deliveries set to begin on August 20. This new model is expected to contribute to Li Auto's future sales and help diversify its product portfolio.
