Breaking the Bank in Berlin: SuperReturn International 2025

It's time for the world's bigwigs of finance to gather for the annual jamboree of wheeling and dealing. Yep, you guessed it – we're heading to Berlin for SuperReturn International 2025! This ain't no ordinary shindig, it's one of the world's largest and most influential private equity events, attracting nearly 6,000 high-rollers from around the globe.

From 27th to 29th March, the InterContinental Hotel in Berlin-Tiergarten will be buzzing with more than 5500 participants hailing from over 70 countries. The elite guest list includes pension funds, insurers, and sovereign funds representing heavy hitters like Azerbaijan, Qatar, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, managing a staggering 46 trillion euros combined.

Don't think it's just all about suits and ties, though. The event is stacked with well-known faces like tennis star Serena Williams, whose fund oversees some 660 million euros, talking diversity and innovation. U2 frontman Bono, co-founder of "The Rise Fund," is also there, having invested over 10 billion euros in climate protection, education, health, and global responsibility projects since its 2016 inception. F1 champion Nico Rosberg will chime in on green technologies and new mobility. It's safe to say seats are snatched up fast, with over 95% booked, and the accompanying program for sightseeing, jogging, paddling, and Pilates fully booked too.

But it's not all smooth sailing. Protests against the conference and the industry it represents have been voiced by a broad coalition of civil society organizations on the opening day, according to Verdi. Critics argue that the private equity industry causes significant damage across various sectors, affecting everything from the housing market to healthcare and agriculture. Jorim Gerrard, a financial systems and real economy expert at Bürgerbewegung Finanzwende, says, "The private equity industry is meeting in Berlin to celebrate its super-profits and agree on the next big deals. We all pay the price for these deals."

Meanwhile, Berlin's new government, with Lars Klingbeil as finance minister, is banking on stimulating economic growth through tax relief for companies. This could mean good things for funds investing locally and benefiting from Klingbeil's first legislative package, the "Investment Booster."

The private equity industry has been on an upward trajectory, with the number of U.S. dollar millionaires soaring to a record-breaking 23.4 million people in 2024, according to recent reports. Germany comes in third in this list, with over 1.6 million millionaires, albeit a slight 40,000-person decline from the previous year. Despite the dip, private wealth in Germany continues to grow, topping 9 trillion euros last year.

So, there you have it – a three-day affair that shapes the global financial landscape, fuels controversies, and might even open up new avenues for the future of finance. We'll see what happens!

P.S.: The SuperReturn International 2025 conference is not only a platform for discussing the latest trends and challenges in the private markets sector. Key themes this year include market volatility and resilience, technology and AI adoption, and climate transition and sustainability. Plus, don't forget about the controversies surrounding AI's impact on job displacement, and the challenges of liquidity, exits, and capital formation.
