Denmark's Nets payment system experienced an outage due to a technical glitch
Nets Improves Communication and Offline Functionality Following Denmark Outage
Nets, the company responsible for managing most bank card payments in Denmark, faced criticism for its communication during a three-hour breakdown on Saturday evening due to a technical fault. The incident caused card payments across Denmark to be declined, leading to disruption at various venues, including the Great Belt Bridge tolls and the Musik i Lejet music festival.
In response to the complaints and feedback, Nets has taken steps to improve both its communication and offline functionality. The company's country director for Denmark, Allan Bonke, acknowledged the need to improve communication during outages and assured that the same fault will not happen again.
To address the disruption caused by the previous breakdown, Nets is planning to roll out a new offline function that will allow merchants to continue processing transactions even in the event of a system failure. This new function is intended to support international cards or mobile phones, providing a temporary solution during network failures.
In addition to enhancing offline transaction capabilities, Nets is also working on improving its communication processes. They have been focusing on better transparency during outages by providing more timely updates on the nature of the problems and estimated restoration times.
The breakdown was due to a failure of one of the system's components, located with a global partner. Despite having a backup system designed to take over in the event of such a failure, it was unable to step in, highlighting the complexity and unusual nature of the fault.
Nets is aiming to improve its services and address the concerns raised by its customers, particularly regarding the lack of timely and clear communication during outages. The company is in the process of addressing these issues and is hopeful that the new offline function and improved communication strategies will help mitigate the impact of future system faults.
