Discussion: Cyber security conference titled Cybercation held in Tartu, Estonia

The Nordic Council of Ministers' Office in Estonia and Estonia's cyber-education startup, CTF Tech, teamed up to host the Cybercation 2023 forum in Tartu on November 11th. This event aims to cultivate more cybersecurity specialists to fortify the digital safety of societies.

Mario Mäeots, a digital learning content developer at CTF Tech, highlighted the urgent need for skilled cyber professionals, given the escalating cyber threats affecting daily life and the economic sphere. Inadequate security measures and a lack of basic cyber hygiene are causing identity frauds, financial losses, and cyber-attacks, as reported frequently.

Organized with the objective of boosting cybersecurity education in the Baltic-Nordic region, Cybercation 2023 endeavors to unite educators, policymakers, and entrepreneurs from Baltic states and Nordic countries. By fostering discussions, knowledge sharing, and community building within the region, Cybercation aims to provide a platform for constructive dialogue on cybersecurity education.

Last year's event focused on evaluating the state of cybersecurity in schools and universities. This year, the primary focus shifted towards gamification as a method for teaching cybersecurity. The forum was closely associated with the Telia Cyber Battle of Nordic-Baltics 2023, a competition in which teams work together to solve cyber security tasks, using the 'flag' as a central keyword.

The event featured three keynote speakers. David Olgart, Cybercampus Sweden, shedding light on the cyber education landscape in Sweden; Lauri Tankler, discussing the perspectives of Estonian students and schools on cybersecurity; and Mihkel Tikk, offering insights into youth and society from the Estonian Defense Force.

Other presentations included collaboration examples from Denmark by Peer Heldgaard Kristensen and an academic perspective on girls' interest in studying cybersecurity from Iiris Tuvi, a science fellow at the University of Tartu.

The panel discussion emphasized the potential advantages of gamification in the cybersecurity learning process, underlining its role in addressing the shortage of cybersecurity professionals.

Cybercation 2023 serves as a testimony to the growing importance of cybersecurity education and the innovative approaches being adopted to meet this necessity. By fostering an environment that encourages collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and the adoption of modern teaching methods, events like Cybercation 2023 contribute significantly to building a more secure digital world.
