EBE Alliance to Launch EU-Wide Breeding Values for Holstein Cattle in 2028
In a significant move for European agriculture, the EBE alliance has been formed to deliver EU-wide breeding values for Holstein cattle from 2028. This new system, EBE, is a joint effort by NAV, vit, and ELIANCE, aiming to improve animal welfare, climate protection, and profitability.
EBE will initially cover cattle from nine countries, representing over 50% of European milk production. The new system aims to provide joint, standardized breeding values for the first time, starting with Holstein cattle. By combining data, expertise, and reference populations across borders, EBE seeks to enhance the comparability and reliability of breeding values.
The EBE alliance is open to all European partners, providing a platform for long-term cooperation in animal breeding. In the future, other dairy and beef cattle breeds will be included, and eventually, other animal species may be considered. Johannes Heise, CEO of EBE, sees this as the next big step for the genetic improvement of European cattle populations.
EBE, set to launch in 2028, promises to bring significant benefits to the European cattle industry. By standardizing breeding values and improving their reliability, EBE can help tackle challenges such as animal welfare, climate protection, and profitability. With its inclusive approach and long-term vision, EBE looks set to shape the future of European cattle breeding.
