Eberswalde's Stunning Bike Garage: A Model for Berlin and Cologne
Eberswalde, a town experiencing population growth and increased commuter flows, has recently inaugurated a striking bicycle parking garage at its train station. The garage, designed by Leitplan, is set to become a model for similar projects in other cities, including Berlin and Cologne.
The Eberswalde garage boasts a unique wood-concrete construction with a larch wood roof, offering 604 parking spaces for conventional bicycles, cargo bicycles, and e-bikes. It provides amenities such as air pumps, tools, and 56 lockable boxes with power outlets.
Berlin, however, has faced delays in constructing bicycle parking garages due to complex planning and staff shortages. The city has been working on projects like the one at the Ostkreuz station, but these are behind schedule. Meanwhile, mobile collective locking facilities and new bike racks are being created as part of the Bike+Ride Offensive. Infravelo plans to create over 1,300 new parking spaces at Berlin's main station by 2030, but only initial plans exist so far.
Eberswalde's modern bicycle parking garage serves as a testament to the growing demand for cycling infrastructure. As cities like Berlin and Cologne plan similar projects, the need for efficient planning and sufficient staffing becomes apparent to keep such initiatives on track.
