EDF Kicks Off Construction on 257 MW/1,028 MWh Battery Storage Projects in South Africa
EDF, along with partners Mulilo, Pele Green Power, and Gibb, has initiated construction on three battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Africa. The projects, part of the Oasis 1 portfolio, are set to be operational by December 2026 and will supply power to Eskom under a 15-year agreement.
The Oasis 1 portfolio consists of three sites with a combined capacity of 257 MW/1,028 MWh. Construction has commenced at the 77 MW/308 MWh sites in Mookodi and Aggeneis, and the 103 MW/412 MWh project in Nieuwehoop. EDF Power Solutions is leading the construction of these projects, which are part of Africa's first Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme.
The financing for the Oasis 1 sites was secured through a loan of around ZAR 7 billion ($405 million) from Standard Bank and ABSA. Despite extensive searches, the identity of the lender for the Oasis 1 project remains unclear.
The completion of these projects by December 2026 will significantly contribute to Africa's energy storage capacity, with each site holding a 15-year power purchase agreement with Eskom. EDF and its partners are committed to advancing Africa's renewable energy sector through these investments.
