Devices that draw in air through a second hose overcome this limitation because they can approach the efficiency of permanently installed air conditioners under ideal situations. Coming in at close to 800 euros, the new EcoFlow Wave 3 embodies this innovation and has performed admirably in our practical tests, not to mention its smaller stature of 519 × 297 × 336 mm and protective IPX4 water-resistance.
Previously, the Wave 3's predecessor was able to cool small rooms effectively under the right conditions. Its 15.6 kg weight has been minimized with optimized technology, resulting in superior cooling capability, despite being every bit as compact as its predecessor. The environmentally-friendly R290 (propane) is the cooling agent of choice.
Kicking Up the Cooling Power
Thanks to improved technology, the Wave 3 boasts increased cooling power (5100 BTU to 6100 BTU or 1500 watts to 1800 watts). Now it's said to be able to chill spaces up to 11 to 17 square meters in size where the preceding version could only manage a maximum of 10 square meters. ntv.de tested the Wave 3 in a 13-square-meter attic room with a 2.35-meter ceiling, ideal test conditions.
The Wave 3 operates right out of the box, but without some DIY love, it can't deliver the cool air necessary to significantly lower the temperature in an overheated room, even at maximum power. While most mobile devices simply require hanging the hoses out the window for operation, the Wave 3 demands a bit more creativity - a cardboard sheet with two hose-sized holes serves as a starting point for your homemade airflow adaptation.
DIY Airflow Innovation
Get creative by finding or crafting a suitable insert with holes that ensure the incoming and outgoing air flows exclusively through the hoses. ntv.de collaborated with a specialized company to create a Plexiglas sheet equipped with two connecting flanges, designed to fit into the open window. Using magnetic adhesive tape to attach and detach the sheet to the window frame makes for quick setup.
The flanges were snug, but required slight adjustments due to the larger hose diameters of the Wave 3, stemming from a new insulating layer that enhances efficiency by preventing exhaust air from reaching excessively high temperatures (around 40 degrees measured near the hose despite insulation).
Once the hoses are connected, you're good to go. The operation is simple, requiring only a brief user manual with easy-to-understand instructions. Options like adjusting the desired temperature, fan speed, operating mode, and heating function are available.
Moisture-Minimizing Mode
The Wave 3 also features a new option to operate exclusively for dehumidifying purposes, which lets you set the desired humidity level. Emptying the collection container, connected via a hose, is periodically required when the desired humidity is reached. An alert will notify you when it's time to attend to this task, and the dehumidify mode button is conveniently located beneath the display.
Managing your settings can be done through the EcoFlow app, which also offers an extended user manual and additional options.
Canine Companions Appreciated
A timer and "Pet Care" function are additional features of the Wave 3. This latter feature is useful for ensuring a cozy environment for your furry friend while you’re out, as it automatically starts maximum cooling at 40 degrees until the temperature reaches a more comfortable 25 degrees. You'll also be notified on your smartphone when you're within Bluetooth range.
If there isn't a power outlet available in your vehicle, an optional battery (currently about 600 euros) can be purchased to dock with the Wave 3, increasing its weight by an additional 9.7 kg but making it a true mobile device. The battery has a capacity of 1024 watt hours, which, while it doesn't outmatch its predecessor's, still offers a decent runtime.
Pushing Past the Limits of Batteries
The battery's lithium iron phosphate design offers longer battery life than lithium-ion batteries, with Ecoflow guaranteeing it will still have at least 80 percent capacity after 4000 charge cycles. Translating this into an estimated lifespan of up to 10 years, even with daily use. You can now charge the battery separately from the air conditioner, for example using a solar panel. A completely empty battery can be fully charged in about three hours.
