BMW M, the high-performance division of the German automaker, has announced its plans for the next-generation M3, which will be available in both electric and gas-powered versions. The electric M3 is set to debut in 2026, while the gas-powered M3's launch date remains undisclosed.
The electric M3 will be based on the next-generation 3-Series and will utilise BMW's newly developed Neue Klasse EV platform. Lessons learned from the electric M2 prototype program, nicknamed "The Beast" due to its initial uncontrollable nature, will benefit the development of the electric M3.
The four-motor electric powertrain, which was initially tested in an i4 M50 around 2022, is rumoured to deliver a four-digit horsepower output. Each wheel in this powertrain can be individually controlled for precise and infinitely variable torque distribution, allowing for optimal torque distribution based on various sensors, steering angle, and accelerator pedal position.
BMW M engineers built an electric prototype based on the previous-generation M2 in 2018, and the online video series discussing BMW M's EV development revealed information about this electric M2 prototype. However, the name of the engineer who led this project remains undisclosed.
Meanwhile, BMW M is also developing a gas-powered M3 based on the next-generation 3-Series. The next gas M3 is expected to use an evolution of the current M3's twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 engine. No specific launch date for the gas-powered M3 has been revealed yet.
BMW's electric powertrain development has been ongoing since at least 2018. The electric M3, expected to launch in 2027 or later, will follow the electric M3 based on the next-generation 3-Series, which is due in 2026. The electric M3 based on the next-generation 3-Series is also rumoured to deliver a four-digit horsepower output, similar to the four-motor electric powertrain.
