Volvo Introduces the 8900 Electric Intercity Bus

Volvo Buses has unveiled the 8900 Electric, a new battery-powered intercity bus designed for urban, intercity, and commuter traffic. The 8900 Electric is the first shared electric mobility platform of the Volvo Group and is a collaborative effort between Volvo Buses and Manufacturing Commercial Vehicles (MCV).

The 8900 Electric is available in two lengths: 12.3 meters and 14.9 meters, accommodating 88 passengers (12.3 meters) or 110 passengers (14.9 meters), including 43 seated (12.3 meters) or 57 seated (14.9 meters). The body of the bus is manufactured by MCV.

The BZR Electric platform, on which the 8900 Electric is based, is designed for vehicles with a permissible total weight of up to 27.2 tons. It supports vehicles ranging from 9.5 to 14.9 meters in length and has a nominal battery capacity of up to 540 kWh. Important components and subsystems of the BZR Electric platform are produced in large quantities, providing an advantage in terms of shared use of spare parts and logistics.

The electric drive is available in a single-engine version with 200 kW or a dual-engine version with 400 kW. The 8900 Electric can be equipped with four to six battery packs, each with a capacity of 90 kWh. The BZR Electric platform offers an electric motor coupled with a two-stage automated transmission, offering 200 kW or, in a dual-motor configuration, up to 400 kW.

The 8900 Electric can be charged with up to 250 kW DC and optionally via OppCharge with a maximum of 450 kW DC.

When compared to other Volvo electric city buses, the 8900 Electric is tailored for intercity passenger transport with a balance of adequate range (typically a few hundred kilometers for daily routes) and mid-range seating capacity (~44-59 seats). This contrasts with Volvo’s electric city bus models, which prioritize higher capacity and urban operation characteristics rather than long-range performance.

The permissible total weight is 20.6 tons for the smaller 8900 and 27 tons for the longer variant. MCV, a partner of Volvo Buses, aims to establish itself in Germany with its own electric city bus. The body for the BZR Electric platform will be manufactured by MCS in 2025. The batteries used in the BZR Electric platform are the same as those used in Volvo's current electric truck generation. Volvo Buses will only produce the chassis and electric powertrains for the BZR Electric platform in its Swedish plants of Borås and Uddevalla.

While precise battery capacity and range figures for the 8900 Electric model specifically are not detailed in the available search results, related information for Volvo’s electric bus lineup indicates that electric intercity buses from manufacturers including Volvo typically feature ranges around 300 km to over 600 km depending on battery capacity and operation conditions. For more accurate information, direct consultation with Volvo Buses or official product datasheets would be necessary.
