Electrified model of the Genesis G80 has been discontinued.
In a move reflecting shifting consumer preferences and market conditions, Genesis North America has announced the discontinuation of the Electrified G80 electric sedan. The decision was made primarily due to very low sales, with only 77 units sold in the first half of 2025.
Jarred Pellat, Senior Manager of Public Relations for Genesis North America, confirmed the brand's commitment to adaptability, stating that the company remains flexible to meet the needs of consumers and the market.
The Electrified G80, originally designed as a luxury all-electric sedan offering 365 hp, a 282-mile range, and an 87.2 kWh battery, was set for a refresh in 2026 with design upgrades and a longer wheelbase. However, these improvements will not reach the U.S. market as the model is being discontinued there.
Despite this setback, Genesis continues to offer several electrified and luxury options in the North American market. These include the all-electric Genesis GV60 SUV, assembled in the U.S., the all-electric Electrified GV70 SUV, and traditional sedans like the G70 sport sedan, G80 with gas engines, and the flagship G90.
In the premium electric sedan segment, competitors like the Tesla Model S, Mercedes-Benz EQE, BMW i4, Audi e-tron GT, and Lucid Air offer strong performance and luxury, likely overshadowing the relatively low-selling Electrified G80 in the U.S.
Looking ahead, Genesis is focusing its electric strategy in North America towards SUVs. The GV60 and Electrified GV70 models remain popular with consumers, and the brand is preparing for the launch of the GV90 electric SUV, built on the same platform as the Kia EV9 and Hyundai IONIQ 9.
For those seeking a fully electric Genesis, the GV60 or Electrified GV70 are the current options. The announced update for the G80e model will not be sold in Canada, and the brand is phasing out the G80e model, but its impact on annual sales is expected to be minimal due to the popularity of the GV60 and GV70 electric models.
- Jarred Pellat, acknowledging the shifting consumer preferences towards technology and finance-centric sectors, assured Genesis North America's adaptability, stating they remain flexible to cater to the evolving needs of consumers and the market.
- In the premium electric sports segment, Genesis is now focusing its strategy predominantly on SUVs, with the GV60, Electrified GV70, and anticipated GV90 electric SUVs gaining popularity, overshadowing their previous offerings like the Electrified G80.
