Sharing's Caring Gaming Laboratories International (GLI) rocked the gaming industry's boat last year, unveiling a groundbreaking gaming security framework at the Regulators Roundtable, addressing the industry's long-awaited demands for industry-specific best practices in security controls.
GLI, with its three and a half decades of gaming industry expertise, teamed up with Bulletproof to pump up the search for an industry-tailored gaming security framework.
"We delved into this because numerous regulators approached us, seeking specific gaming-related cybersecurity measures that we could adhere to," Joe Bunevith, GLI's Vice-President of Government and Regulatory Affairs, explained. "At the time, the answer was disappointingly 'no'."
Bunevith nodded respectfully to other standards in the industry, such as the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the National Security Commission (NSC), and the Center for Internet Security (CIS).
"However, they are quite general for any business type," he elaborated. "We embarked on creating a gaming-security-specific framework."
GLI made good on their promise, delivering the framework in time for the 25th Regulators Roundtable, which takes place at Palms Las Vegas from April 16 - 17.
"We just published the first two modules, which we are calling the Common Controls," Bunevith announced. "These contain various modules for different sectors of our mammoth gaming industry."
The modules are GLI-GSF-1, Gaming Information Security (GIS) Controls Audit v 1.0, and GLI-GSF-2, Gaming Technical Security (GTS) Assessment v 1.0. These modules streamline the Common Controls necessary for auditing gaming organizations.
Gambling operations face a barrage of threats, and regulatory bodies heavily rely on the knowledge of an Independent Security Firm (ISF) to execute gaming security assessments as an essential supplement to the testing and certification of a GPE's critical system components by an Independent Test Laboratory (ITL).
GLI-GSF-1 especially focuses on the gaming information security (GIS) common controls essential for auditing a gaming organization's Gaming Information Security Management System (GISMS) to ensure reliable management of security in a gaming organization's entire operation.
The framework's aim is to ensure fair play for patrons, compliant gaming products, and compliant operators within the jurisdictions. GLI seeks to provide the tools for suppliers, operators, and regulators to be on the same page, thus satisfying the need for industry unity and security across all sectors.
The forthcoming plan is to kick-start the development of individual modules beyond the Common Controls. This includes modules for vendors of physical retail locations, iGaming, Sportsbook, cloud computing cashless systems, artificial intelligence, lottery, and other specialized areas.
Each module in the GLI-GSF is a carefully crafted amalgam of gaming industry best practices and is available for free download on GLI's official website.
- GLI's gaming security framework, revolutionizing the gambling industry, targets specifically the security controls within the data-and-cloud-computing sector, addressing a long-standing industry demand.
- Responding to the need for gaming-specific cybersecurity measures, GLI partnered with Bulletproof to develop a comprehensive gaming security framework tailored to the industry.
- The new framework has been heavily influenced by the technology sector, particularly in its approach to secure gaming operations and protect against cyber threats in the sportsbook segment.
- With the escalating concern for finance-related security in the gaming industry, the framework aims to ensure compliance and security, providing a unifying approach for all stakeholders, including suppliers, operators, and regulators.
- As the gaming industry continues to evolve, the framework will expand to cover specialized areas such as iGaming, lottery, physical retail locations, artificial intelligence, and cashless systems, further strengthening industry-wide cybersecurity and data protection practices.
