Enel Launches $10K Challenge to Secure EV Charging Infrastructure Against Cable Theft
Enel, a global energy company, has launched an open innovation challenge to tackle cable theft at its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in Italy and Spain. The initiative, offering up to $10,000, seeks scalable solutions to protect charging points ranging from 25 kilowatts to over 400 kilowatts, which contain significant amounts of copper.
The challenge, launched in response to cable theft incidents since December 2024, aims to find ready-to-implement solutions compatible with existing charging infrastructure. Participants must submit detailed proposals via the openinnovability.com platform, including technical descriptions, cost analysis, and possible use cases. Proposed solutions should incorporate deterrence mechanisms, early detection systems, and integration with existing platforms, while complying with EU regulations.
The winning proposal will enter into a collaboration with Enel, involving pilot testing, prototype installation, and operational monitoring. Although the participating companies have not been publicly disclosed, the challenge is open until 8 September 2025, encouraging innovative solutions to secure Enel's charging infrastructure.
Enel's open innovation challenge highlights the growing need for security measures in EV charging infrastructure. By encouraging scalable and compatible solutions, the company aims to protect its charging points and ensure the safety of its users. The winning proposal, to be selected based on its technical merit and feasibility, will play a crucial role in enhancing the security of Enel's charging network.
