Southeast Asian Nations Adhere to Unified Approach to Counter US Tariffs, Boost Economic Diversification
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia—Nations within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) are displaying a united front as they address the fallout from escalating U.S. tariffs, focusing on bolstering regional economic integration, diversifying trade markets, and intensifying negotiations with Washington.
Foreign Minister of Malaysia, Mohamad Hasan, spoke during the recent ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting, urging members to strengthen regional economic ties and prepare for potential economic downturns caused by global trade disruptions. This comes amid heightened tensions between the U.S. and the region, as tariffs of up to 49% on certain goods from several ASEAN nations have been implemented by the Trump administration.
The Malaysian minister emphasized the significance of regional unity, noting that ASEAN countries are among those most heavily impacted by the recently imposed tariffs. The intensifying trade war between the U.S. and China is causing production and trade patterns to be dramatically affected, potentially leading to a global economic slowdown.
"At this critical juncture, it is crucial that we seize the opportunity to deepen regional economic integration, thereby providing our region with improved protection against external shocks," said Mohamad.
In an attempt to set a unified stance, ASEAN has been seeking diplomatic talks with the U.S. as a bloc. When President Donald Trump announced a 90-day suspension of tariffs in April, countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam promptly initiated trade negotiations with Washington.
The call for unity doesn't only extend to economic matters. Mohamad also urged the warring parties in Myanmar, which have been embroiled in a deadly civil war since a military takeover in 2021, to cease hostilities and allow for humanitarian aid to better reach those in need.
The Foreign Ministers' Meeting preceded a scheduled ASEAN Leaders' Summit in Malaysia, the current ASEAN chair. The summit is set to be followed by a meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang and leaders from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
In a region confronted by the challenges of climate change, unregulated technologies, and increased external pressures, Mohamad highlighted the importance of ASEAN unity, stating, "External pressures continue to rise, and the scope of challenges now carries higher stakes than ever before."
ASEAN members remain committed to aiding Myanmar, in its recovery following a catastrophic earthquake in March that claimed the lives of over 3,700 people. Myanmar's military leaders were barred from attending ASEAN meetings due to their refusal to comply with ASEAN's peace plan, which includes negotiations and the delivery of humanitarian aid.
