Enhancing Your Path of Exile 2 Character with Ease: A Guide to Anointing

In the early stages of Path of Exile 2, players may find themselves in need of constant character upgrades to tackle increasingly challenging content. While passive skill point allocation can aid in this, the limited number of points available makes it a slow process. An alternate method of progression is purchasing POE 2 currency to enhance equipment, but this approach is primarily suited for the early game and will become cost-prohibitive in the endgame.

Enter the powerful Anointing mechanic, which allows players to gain beneficial passive skill effects without any connection. This guide aims to provide a comprehensive overview of Anointing in Path of Exile 2, including the necessary items for the operation and the items it can be used on. As Path of Exile 2 is still in Early Access, it is important to note that the Anointing mechanic may change or be upgraded in the full version.

How to Anoint

Anointing in Path of Exile 2 follows the same method as in the original game - Distilled Emotions are infused into items for upgrade. However, it's crucial to understand that only Amulets and Waystones can be Anointed.

Distilled Emotions come in ten types: Despair, Disgust, Greed, Ire, Suffering, Paranoia, Guilt, Envy, Fear, and Isolation, each with a unique function. With the sheer quantity of Distilled Emotions required in the game, understanding efficient methods for cultivating them is essential.

Delirium Maps, represented by white icons, are the primary method for farming Distilled Emotions. In these maps, defeat as many Delirium Fog enemies as possible before the progress bar runs out to be rewarded with random Distilled Emotions upon map completion. Reforging Benches and Simulacrum in the endgame can also yield Distilled Emotions, but please note that the Reforging Bench cannot be used to farm POE2 Currency.

Items That Can Be Anointed

Amulets

By infusing Distilled Emotions into Amulets, players can boost their build's defensive capabilities. To begin, determine which Distilled Emotions are required for a specific Anoint by hovering over the passive skill tree while holding Alt (or R3 on a controller). Place the desired Amulet in the top slot, the three Emotions at the bottom, and then hit the Infuse button to complete the Anointing process. Be mindful of your build's requirements before Anointing, as Amulets may need to change their attached Distilled Emotions during exploration, allowing for repeated Anointing to overwrite previous ones. Corrupted or Mirrored Amulets cannot be Anointed, so alternative approaches such as upgrading the rarity or affixes with POE 2 Regal Orbs should be considered if necessary.

Waystones

Waystones are another item that can be Anointed, granting Delirium effects to the maps they unlock and additional effects depending on the Distilled Emotion used. The Anointing process for Waystones is similar to that for Amulets, with Distilled Emotions being placed in the Infusing Window alongside the Waystones. It should be noted that infusing Waystones will significantly increase the map's difficulty, so a strong build is essential before attempting it. The following lists the effects each Distilled Emotion will have on Waystones:

  • Distilled Despair: Increases the stack size of Simulacrum Splinters by 30%
  • Distilled Disgust: Increases the chance of finding Precursor Tablets by 30%
  • Distilled Greed: Increases the rarity of items picked up by 8%
  • Distilled Ire: 20% more Magic Monsters spawn in the map
  • Distilled Suffering: Unique Monsters (including Bosses) gain additional modifiers
  • Distilled Paranoia: 15% more Rare Monsters are present
  • Distilled Guilt: Pack Size increases by 8%, allowing for more loot
  • Distilled Envy: Increases the chance of obtaining Waystones by 30%
  • Distilled Fear: Rare Monsters have a 25% chance of gaining additional modifiers
  • Distilled Isolation: Enhances farming efficiency

By using three Distilled Emotions, the effects they create will stack on Waystones. For example, using Greed, Despair, and Isolation results in a 80% increase in Delirious Waystones, a 30% increase in Simulacrum Splinter stacks, and an 8% increase in rarity of items picked up.

This guide aims to provide players with the knowledge and tools necessary to make the most of the Anointing mechanic in Path of Exile 2, allowing for powerful builds and more challenging gameplay experiences. Happy adventuring!
