With the arrival of computers and internet connections in the majority of German households, the young generation took the reins—and who could blame them? The late 90s and early 2000s marked an exciting era, filled with clunky yet charming technology that opened up a world of entertainment, friendships, and unadulterated digital freedom. Let's journey back in time and revisit our beloved computer programs from those golden days.

ICQ: The Unmatched Messaging Companion

Remember those intimate, real-time chats with your closest friends? ICQ was undeniably the go-to messenger, offering a direct line of communication with an almost personal touch. Every user had their unique nickname, and—believe it or not—some of us still remember those numbers to this day. Before the advent of smartphones, ICQ was our savior, enabling low-cost, immediate communication that even eclipsed the costly SMS fees of yesteryear. Sweet memories of Slide-a-Lama and Zoopaloola still linger in the hearts of many.

eMule: The Great File-Sharing Battlefield

In those days, we had three options: hit the record stores, save up for expensive CDs, or embark on the daring quest for a digital utopia. eMule was one of the many file-sharing programs that made headlines, alongside Napster, Kazaa, uTorrent, WinMX, and Limewire. The cult of filesharing was born, and Germany was no exception. Although a few unfortunate souls encountered Rick Astley or the dreaded "warning wave" legal notices, we never intended any harm.

WinAmp: The Perfect Media Companion

As we accrued our music collections-legally or otherwise-we needed a reliable media player, and WinAmp proved to be the perfect choice. Bouyant on refined performance and minimal resource consumption, it allowed us to enjoy our newly-minted MP3s and even offered visually-stimulating psychedelic visualizations for those who desired a bit of flair.

GIMP: The Budding Artist in Each of Us

With our digital cameras capturing moments of our lives like never before, the need for simple yet efficient image editing tools was paramount. GIMP served as our free, open-source, entry-level Photoshop alternative. It gave us the tools for basic editing, helping us to subtly enhance our selfies and round out the perfection of our digital canvas.

Nero Burning Rom: The Master of Discs

With a plethora of CDs, movies, and documents in our ever-expanding digital libraries, a reliable disc burner was essential. Nero Burning Rom set the standard, with its user-friendly design and assurance that our precious data would be seen into the world. A bit of trivia: Nero, the Roman Emperor, was known for his infamous tendencies to set the city (and various other things) ablaze. Coincidence, or a wink to the digital afterlife that Nero Burning Rom would soon unleash?

YouTube to MP3 Converter: The Song Savior

Sometimes the music of our dreams could only be found on YouTube, and we yearned to possess these elusive tracks. YouTube to MP3 Converter was our guardian angel, extracting the melodies we so desperately desired from the realm of online video and bestowing them upon us as beautiful MP3 files.
