Neuss Business Climate: A Drop in Q2 2024

The Rhein-Kreis Neuss's business climate has taken a hit in mid-2024 compared to the summer 2023 survey. After touching an all-time high in the first year post-pandemic, the business climate index dropped four points, down to 132, according to the 17th edition of the Rhein-Kreis Neuss Middle Class Barometer.

This index is based on the views of 500 companies across the region's municipalities. Despite the downturn, the region's economy continues to look bright due to positive evaluations of the current and future order situations.

The decline in business sentiment is not uniform across the eight municipalities. Dormagen, Jüchen, and Rommerskirchen show growth, while Neuss and Korschenbroich see greater declines. Kaarst, Grevenbroich, and Meerbusch maintain stable, albeit different, levels.

Two significant sectors experiencing a drop are manufacturing and retail, while construction rebounds after a 2023 lull, thanks to ongoing infrastructure projects. The service sector, a key component of the Rhein-Kreis Neuss economy, experiences only minor losses.

The notion of structural change plays a vital role in the region. The percentage of companies that see only opportunities in this process has decreased, but 88 percent still consider it critical.

An ongoing concern, even as Microsoft prepares to settle in the Rhine region, is affordable energy supply, with 65 percent of companies citing it as a significant uncertainty.

However, regional businesses remain optimistic about investing, with 59 percent planning to do so, marking an increase over the federal average. This is the first time since 2019 that the region's investment readiness has exceeded the national average and approached its 2019 peak.

The beauty of Neuss offers more than just a thriving economy. To stay updated on social developments, art, culture, and more, sign up for our free newsletter!
