Exhausted UFC Combatant Hangs Up Gloves Following Two Devastating Knockout Setbacks
Embracing the end of a grueling yet rewarding journey, UFC fighter Bill Algeo decided to hang up his gloves for good. After enduring a couple of rough knockout losses, Algeo announced his retirement on Instagram, leaving behind a career full of experiences and lessons.
At 35, Algeo called it quits after a whopping 13-year MMA career. From crushing regional promotions like Cage Fury Fighting Championships (CFFC) and Ring of Combat to securing championship titles, Algeo's journey was filled with triumphs and challenges alike.
His debut in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) did not go as planned, but he bounced back, winning five out of his next seven bouts, earning three performance bonuses along the way. However, a recent two-fight losing streak, including a devastating knockout by Doo Ho Choi, apparently made him question if he still had what it took to compete.
Algeo left the UFC with an overall record of 18-9, a 5-5 mark in the Octagon. His career also included a stint on Dana White’s Contender Series, where he lost to Brendan Loughnane.
Reflecting on his journey, Algeo expressed gratitude towards the UFC and his supporters, particularly during the pandemic. He acknowledged that the UFC provided income when his own gym was labeled non-essential and was forced to close.
Algeo’s retirement hasn't stopped him from staying involved in the sport he loves. He plans to spend his time guiding the next generation of fighters at Algeo MMA, where he says he’s met plenty of cool people and shared the cage with rivals, friends, and heroes alike.
His retirement post was flooded with heartfelt messages from fellow fighters like Andre Petroski, Loughnane, Joe Solecki, Billy Quarantillo, Sodiq Yusuff, and Shane Burgos, who all took time to pay their respects.
Algeo’s career may not have been marked by stardom or true championship glory, but he did earn respect from his peers and a legion of fans. Despite the two recent losses, Algeo leaves the sport with his head held high, knowing that he gave it his all.
